Identification:
A well-marked shrike with clear sexual dimorphism. The male is distinctive with a grey head, bold black mask, rich chestnut back, and pale underparts often with a pinkish wash. The female is more subdued, brown with fine barring and less contrast, but still shows the typical shrike structure. Both sexes have a hooked bill.

Habitat:
Open landscapes with scattered shrubs or trees, including farmland, scrublands, and forest edges.

Status in Lebanon:
Common passage migrant and local breeder. Found in suitable habitats during migration and breeding season.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds on insects, small birds, reptiles, and small mammals.

Behavior:
Often seen perched prominently on bushes, wires, or fences. Hunts by scanning from a perch and swooping down to catch prey. Known for impaling prey on thorns or sharp objects. Usually solitary or in pairs.
