Identification:
A small, striking warbler with strong contrast in the male. The breeding male has a black head and throat, sharply contrasting with a white moustachial stripe and grey body. The eye-ring is red and noticeable. The female is more subdued, with grey-brown upperparts and a paler underside, lacking the strong black head pattern but still showing a faint eye-ring. The tail is relatively long and often flicked.

Habitat:
Rocky hillsides, open scrublands, forest edges, and Mediterranean maquis, often on slopes with scattered vegetation.

Status in Lebanon:
Passage migrant and local breeder. Found in suitable habitats during migration and breeding season, particularly in hilly and mountainous areas.

Diet:
Insectivorous — feeds on insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates.

Behavior:
Active and often remains within low vegetation or shrubs. Moves quickly while foraging, frequently flicking its tail. More often heard than seen. Males are vocal during the breeding season and defend territories.
