The Short-tailed Shearwater (Ardenna tenuirostris), also known as the Tasmanian Muttonbird, is a long-distance migratory seabird that breeds in huge numbers on southern Australian islands, especially Tasmania. It is uniformly dark brown, similar to the Sooty Shearwater, but can be distinguished by its shorter tail, more compact shape, and slightly slimmer bill. During the non-breeding season, it undertakes an impressive trans-equatorial migration, reaching the North Pacific and occasionally straying into the Indian Ocean and Arabian waters as a rare pelagic vagrant. It forages far offshore, often in large flocks, feeding on fish, squid, and crustaceans. Any sighting near the Arabian Peninsula is noteworthy due to its typically remote, open-ocean range.
