The Short-toed Snake Eagle (Circaetus gallicus) is a large and distinctive bird of prey recorded in Lebanon mainly during migration, as the country lies along a major flyway used by soaring raptors moving between Eurasia and Africa. It is recognized by its broad wings, relatively large rounded head, pale underparts, and steady circling flight, often seen high above mountain slopes, open country, and wooded ridges while searching for prey. True to its name, this eagle feeds largely on reptiles, especially snakes, and it scans the ground with great focus before dropping with precision. Its regular appearance during migration, together with its strong ecological specialization, makes the Short-toed Snake Eagle one of the notable raptors associated with Lebanon’s seasonal bird movement.
