Identification:
A small and delicate wader with relatively long yellowish legs and a fine dark bill. The upperparts are grey-brown with subtle pale edging, while the underparts are whitish. In breeding plumage, the upperparts show warmer tones with darker streaking. In flight, it lacks the bold wing stripe seen in many small waders, and the outer tail feathers are white.

Habitat:
Shallow wetlands, muddy edges of freshwater pools, marshes, lagoons, and coastal mudflats.

Status in the UAE:
Passage migrant and winter visitor. Regularly recorded in wetlands and shallow water habitats across the country.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds on insects, larvae, worms, crustaceans, and other small invertebrates.

Behavior:
Usually feeds by walking slowly and deliberately along muddy edges, unlike some more active stints. Often solitary or in small groups. Frequently picks prey from the surface or shallow water. Quiet and inconspicuous, relying on camouflage and subtle movement.
