Common Ringed Plover / Charadrius hiaticula **

The Common Ringed Plover (Charadrius hiaticula) is a small, stocky wading bird that can be easily identified by its distinctive black-and-white head pattern, orange bill with a black tip, and orange legs. It breeds in the Arctic and temperate regions of Europe and Asia, nesting on open, gravelly or sandy shores, often near water. During winter, it migrates to coastal areas across Europe, Africa, and parts of the Middle East, including the UAE, where it can be seen on mudflats, estuaries, and sandy beaches. The Common Ringed Plover forages for insects, crustaceans, and worms, using a characteristic stop-start running movement to locate its prey. Though its population is relatively stable, the species faces threats from habitat disturbance and degradation, particularly along migratory stopover sites and wintering grounds.
