Gardner’s Leaf-toed Gecko

The Middle Eastern Short-fingered Gecko \ Stenodactylus doriae, is a small nocturnal gecko of sandy and arid landscapes. It has a pale desert coloration, large eyes, a delicate body, and a soft pattern that helps it blend into sand and gravel. Compared with mountain geckos, it has a more ground-dwelling appearance, built for moving across open desert surfaces rather than climbing rocks or walls. The species is recorded across parts of Western Asia, including the United Arab Emirates.

Habitat and behavior

In the UAE, this species is mostly associated with desert habitats, especially sandy areas, gravel plains, and open ground with scattered vegetation. It is active at night, when the sand cools and small insects become easier to hunt. During the day, it remains hidden in the ground or under shelter, avoiding heat and predators. At night, it can often be seen sitting low on the sand or moving quickly between open patches and small desert plants.

Why this species matters

This gecko represents the hidden life of the UAE desert after dark. It may be small and easy to overlook, but it is one of the species that makes night herping in sandy habitats so rewarding. Recent reporting also highlighted fluorescence in UAE desert geckos, including Stenodactylus doriae, showing that even common-looking desert reptiles can still reveal surprising features when studied closely.
