The Levantine Glass Lizard (Pseudopus apodus levantinus), known in Lebanon as Abu Qaraʿ, is one of the country’s most remarkable reptiles and the only legless lizard regularly recorded there. Although it is often mistaken for a snake, it is in fact a lizard, distinguished by features such as movable eyelids, external ear openings, and a more rigid body form. In Lebanon, it occurs in a range of habitats including rocky hillsides, scrub, woodland edges, and cultivated areas, where it moves with surprising strength and feeds mainly on snails, slugs, large insects, and other small animals. Harmless to humans despite its large size and unusual appearance, the Levantine Glass Lizard is an important part of Lebanon’s reptile diversity and a striking example of adaptation within Mediterranean ecosystems.
