The Black Redstart (Phoenicurus ochruros) is a familiar winter visitor and passage migrant in Lebanon, often spotted in urban areas, rocky slopes, and open countryside. Males are easily recognized by their sooty-grey plumage, black face, and vibrant rust-colored tail, while females and juveniles are plainer but share the distinctive tail twitching behavior. In colder months, these birds are frequently seen flitting between low perches, foraging on the ground for insects and small invertebrates. Their adaptability allows them to thrive in both natural and man-made environments, making them a regular sight in Lebanese villages, ruins, and city gardens during the winter season.
