The Hajar Mountain Gecko (Hemidactylus hajarensis) is a small nocturnal gecko endemic to the Hajar Mountains of the United Arab Emirates and northern Oman. Adapted to rugged mountain environments, it inhabits rocky slopes, cliffs, wadis, and boulder-strewn valleys, where its mottled grey-brown coloration provides effective camouflage against the surrounding stone. Like other members of the genus Hemidactylus, it possesses well-developed adhesive toe pads that allow it to climb vertical rock surfaces with ease. Active after sunset, the Hajar Mountain Gecko emerges from cracks and crevices to hunt insects and other small invertebrates. Its restricted distribution within the Hajar Mountains makes it an important component of the region’s unique reptile fauna and highlights the remarkable biodiversity found within the mountain ecosystems of the UAE.
