The Gardner’s Leaf-toed Gecko (Asaccus gardneri) is a small nocturnal gecko native to the Hajar Mountain range of the United Arab Emirates and northern Oman. Closely associated with rocky habitats, it is typically found on cliffs, boulder fields, mountain wadis, and steep rocky slopes, where its cryptic coloration allows it to blend seamlessly with the surrounding stone. Like other members of the genus Asaccus, it possesses specialized toe pads and leaf-like digits that provide excellent grip on vertical rock surfaces. Active after dark, it emerges to hunt small insects and other invertebrates among cracks and rock faces. Due to its restricted distribution and dependence on mountainous habitats, the species is considered an important component of the UAE’s unique mountain biodiversity and a notable reptile of the Hajar ecosystem.
