The Little Heron (Butorides atricapilla), is a small, stocky bird found in a wide range of habitats across tropical and subtropical regions, including parts of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. This heron is easily identifiable by its dark greenish-black cap, grayish body, and distinctive streaked neck and chest, which give it a "striated" appearance. The Striated Heron is typically solitary and is most often seen along the edges of wetlands, mangroves, rivers, and even coastal areas. It is an expert hunter, often seen patiently stalking its prey, which includes fish, crustaceans, and insects, before making a quick strike. Remarkably, this species has been observed using tools, such as dropping insects or twigs onto the water surface to lure fish closer—a rare behavior among birds. In the UAE, the Striated Heron is found in suitable habitats, particularly in coastal areas and mangrove forests.
