The Baetic Ground Mantis (Rivetina baetica) is a medium-sized praying mantis adapted to dry, open habitats across parts of the Mediterranean region, including arid grasslands, scrublands, and semi-desert environments. Unlike many mantis species that rely on vegetation for concealment, this species spends much of its time on the ground, where its cryptic sandy-brown coloration provides excellent camouflage among soil, stones, and dry vegetation. It is an ambush predator, remaining motionless for long periods before striking rapidly at passing insects and other small arthropods with its powerful raptorial forelegs. Its slender build and ground-dwelling behavior make it particularly well suited to open landscapes, where it plays an important role in regulating insect populations.
