The Eurasian Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) is a small, swift, and highly agile bird of prey recorded in Lebanon mainly as a passage migrant and winter visitor, moving through a country that lies on an important migration bottleneck for raptors. It is recognized by its compact accipiter shape, relatively short broad wings, long square-cut tail, and fast wingbeats broken by short glides, while adults show finely barred underparts and a sharp, alert expression. In Lebanon, it is most likely to be seen over woodlands, forest edges, and open country with scattered trees, where it hunts with speed and surprise, often targeting small birds in rapid low-level pursuit. Though not as dramatic in size as larger eagles, the Eurasian Sparrowhawk is one of the most skillful aerial hunters passing through the Lebanese landscape, adding depth and energy to the country’s rich migratory raptor season.
