Arabian Web-footed Sand Gecko
The Arabian Web-footed Sand Gecko (Trigonodactylus arabicus) is one of the smallest desert reptiles in the United Arab Emirates, reaching approximately 38 mm in snout–vent length. This delicate, nocturnal gecko has a flattened body, large eyes with vertical pupils, and pale, almost translucent coloration marked by subtle dark patterns. Its most distinctive feature is the webbing between its front toes, an adaptation that helps it move efficiently across loose desert sand.
Habitat and behavior
Inhabits soft sandy deserts, windblown dunes, and open sandy plains with scattered vegetation across the UAE and much of the Arabian Peninsula. Strictly nocturnal and ground-dwelling, it emerges after dark to hunt small insects and other arthropods. When threatened, it may retreat beneath vegetation or sprint a short distance before suddenly flattening its body against the sand, relying on camouflage to escape detection. Its webbed front toes and fringed hind toes provide excellent mobility on unstable sandy surfaces.
Why this species matters
Despite its tiny size, the Arabian Web-footed Sand Gecko demonstrates the remarkable adaptations that allow wildlife to survive in the harsh Arabian Desert. Its specialized feet, camouflage, and nocturnal lifestyle illustrate how desert reptiles have evolved to exploit challenging sandy habitats. As a predator of small invertebrates and part of the desert food web, it contributes to the ecological balance of these environments. Documenting this species also highlights the biodiversity hidden within seemingly empty dunes and reinforces the importance of protecting natural desert habitats.
