The Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis), also known as the Dabchick, is the smallest grebe species and a compact freshwater diving bird commonly found on ponds, lakes, marshes, and slow-moving waterways. It is recognized by its rounded body, short neck, and frequent diving behavior, often disappearing underwater for extended periods while searching for food. During the breeding season, adults develop rich chestnut tones on the neck and face, contrasted by a pale patch near the bill, while non-breeding birds appear browner and paler. The Little Grebe feeds mainly on aquatic insects, small fish, crustaceans, and tadpoles. Although usually quiet and unobtrusive, it produces distinctive trilling calls, especially during the breeding season. Its ability to dive quickly and remain hidden among vegetation makes it one of the more elusive wetland birds despite being widespread.
