The Western Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) is a compact, adaptable white heron recorded in Lebanon as part of the country’s wetland and agricultural birdlife, where it is often seen in marshes, lake edges, open fields, and farmland, especially near grazing animals. It is easily recognized by its all-white plumage, sturdy yellow bill, and relatively short neck, while in the breeding season it develops warm buff tones on the crown, chest, and back. Unlike many herons that feed mainly in shallow water, the Cattle Egret frequently forages on land, walking through grass or around livestock to catch insects, small reptiles, frogs, and other prey disturbed by movement. Recent conservation monitoring at Hima Lake Mansoura in the Bekaa even documented returning pairs building nests, showing that the species can also breed locally in suitable conditions and reflecting the importance of Lebanon’s wetlands as safe feeding and nesting habitat.
