The Southern White-breasted Hedgehog (Erinaceus concolor) is a small, nocturnal mammal widely distributed across Lebanon, where it inhabits a variety of environments ranging from woodlands and scrublands to agricultural areas and even gardens near human settlements. It is recognized by its spiny back, pale underparts, and relatively larger, lighter face compared to other hedgehog species. This adaptable insectivore emerges at night to forage for insects, worms, snails, and other small invertebrates, occasionally supplementing its diet with fruits or carrion. In Lebanon, it plays an important ecological role by helping control insect populations. Despite its resilience, it faces threats from road mortality, habitat disturbance, and pesticide use, making awareness and habitat protection important for its continued survival.
